There has always been a huge problem for SETI in my opinion, the size of the area to scan. The sky is huge and so much is out there! It never really occurred to me that we might have already recorded something interesting and just missed it. That's where AI might help. A learning algorithm has been applied to data from the Green Bank Telescope—data that had already been analyzed and cleared by traditional methods. The AI was able to identify 8 promising technosignature candidates that were previously classified as human-generated interference. It makes me wonder what other major discoveries might be hiding in plain sight in old scientific datasets.
Are there any experts in this field that would be able to comment on this and tell us what AI might be able to do with old data like this? What do you think?
