My dad got one of these. I was able to quickly identify it was a scam because it went to an email provider he doesn't use for iCloud/Apple, and he has no other cloud storage. But troubleshooting stuff like this remotely is difficult because users will often misread words to match what they expect it to say. For example, my dad kept saying that the email was about his "iCloud storage" when in fact it just said "cloud storage". His mind filled in the blank to make it make sense.

i thought id throw this up as PSA.

my region is seeing a big uptick in this and similar phishes.

a lot of people are falling for it.

very authentic looking spoofed emails and notification spam spraying attack.

people who have no cloud usage at all, think they will lose every thing.

the illegal files; illegle usage; version is doing well here also.

This article smells of AI.

Yeah the only time I felt proud to only read the article title instead of 16 paragraphs and a table of contents on a new kind of spam email.

Yes I get it. The hook is constantly changing. I'm glad you let me know the new one. That's all I need.

it may smell but it does accurately describe the problem, the proximal problem.

i think ultimately the problem is users are not seeing it as abnormal, they have been trained to accept subscription models for everything, even local storage.
