My understanding is that it is against the law for a Bodhisattva to reincarnate without permission in China. Kinda makes me think of King Herod but spiritual matters have long been tightly regulated in China -- I think it's been illegal to get possessed by a fox at least since the Ming dynasty.

The People think that is silly, but spiritual regulation is how you nip anti-intellectualism in the bud. Fight imbecility with imbecility!
Calvinism is now too deep in the American psyche to be beaten out, immigration isnt going to help (unless you replace most of the elites with Latinos, for example)
In the XXth century, academic institutions were fortuitously 5th-columned by wised-up continental Europeans (but this selfcorrected too far in the non-technocratic direction, and thus the backlash. Yes, this is already the counter counter counter revolution)
