This is a great essay that echoes my own experience when I entered the field a few lifetimes back. It was quite a shock to discover that "do what you love for a living and you'll never work a day in your life" was a rotten lie. All it does is turn what you love into work.
Once I accepted that was the reality and had my expectations properly set, it made things a lot more tolerable. I never stopped doing what I love, of course, I just do it on my own time.
