Ask HN: Resources for building AI agents for software development?

I want to experiment with building my own AI agents to help with software development beyond just (but inclusive of) code generation.

I've come across a few tools and platforms, but I’m still trying to make sense of the space:

- AI Native Dev Tooling Landscape: super comprehensive list, but honestly overwhelming. Not sure which tools are actually useful for building agents vs. just using them. https://landscape.ainativedev.io/

I've heard of Crew AI (but haven’t tried it yet). https://www.crewai.com/

I saw Google’s announcement about building your own agents with Vertex, but haven't dug into it yet. https://cloud.google.com/products/agent-builder

A few open questions I’m wrestling with:

- What are the best starting points for building agents for dev work?

- Are there any open-source frameworks people recommend?

- Is it worth the effort to build your own vs. just using more mature tools (e.g. Cursor or Zed, Replit Ghostwriter, Windsurf, Devin, etc.)?

Would love any suggestions, frameworks, lessons learned, or even reasons not to go down this path.

Thanks!

I've been writing about our real learnings from building proactive AI agents :)

I just gave this a read, super interesting! I've been thinking a lot about simulations on a slightly tangential note, interesting to see how you're using agents to test other agentic products.
