Because most COVID-19 deaths occurred in the elderly (average age was around 77 in my State in America), analyses should report projected QALY (quality-adjusted life years, how many quality years of life were preserved by preventing a COVID death) in addition to mortality. Colin Powell died from COVID at age 84, but he was suffering from multiple myeloma and Parkinson’s disease at the time. That death counts the same in mortality statistics as a healthy 8 year old dying in a bicycle accident. They are not the same and should be accounted as such.
