It's a strange dynamic.

The GOP, even long before Trump, has always had an authoritarian streak as far as federal government and security related topics go. If there ever was any libertarian streak in the GOP, it was gone long ago.

But voters still seem to believe things at a meme level depth.

People also think they’re the party of small government and fiscal discipline when a glance at the last 50 years of history shows that they are at best no better than the Democrats on these things. That’s being generous.

I think the GOP is way better at marketing itself. Of course part of the reason for that is that they have a more well defined demographic. The democrats are “everyone else” at this point and it’s hard to affinity market to a party that is actually three or four parties in a trenchcoat.

In the past 10 years the far right wing of the party has done an insanely good job marketing itself to young men too. Of course part of that is filling a cultural void. If you’re the only one to show up you win by default.
