If HN were to be monetized then post submissions would go up, quality would drop, the need for moderation would rise and the site would lose it's place as a quality discussion site.

Well for the first part, no one likes ads, so no one gets paid and that is how the system is set up. For the second part, who do you see as this "winner" who takes all and what are they getting?
Alternatively, are you suggesting that Y Combinator create a meme coin and give people coin to participate rather than internet points? Do you feel that there are not enough quality posts at the moment? What would be their incentive to seed these coins with value and how would someone buy and sell their rep? Why would allowing someone to simply purchase rep add any real value to the quality of the discourse here?

Captures how much conviction and gusto crypto projects manage to put behind non-existent problems with impossible solutions to a tee... then it jumps the shark and actually mentions crypto.
