“Dr. Donald Cameron subjected unwitting patients at Montreal's Allan Memorial Institute to CIA-funded experiments from 1957-1964, including forced drug-induced comas lasting up to 86 days, massive electroshock treatments at 30-40 times normal intensity, sensory deprivation combined with paralytic drugs, and 'psychic driving' where patients were forced to listen to repetitive messages up to half a million times. His victims, who had sought help for depression and anxiety, instead suffered permanent memory loss, regression to childlike states requiring relearning of basic life skills, and lasting psychological damage - with one victim's daughter describing how 'it took away her soul.'”

Cameron served as president of the American Psychiatric Association, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, and in 1961 became president of the World Psychiatric Association.
