I do not really agree with the premise of this story. not that I think it is entirely wrong just wanting everything in a simple package.
I have been to stores (autopart stores used to be more just ask for the part) that just have a counter and you just ask for the thing you need. You need to be somewhat fluent in the language though. It is also helpful if you need something standard. They are often not very good at thinking about your one unique problem and coming up with a solution.
Home Depot type stores are dreadful. They have run the good stores out of business and are staffed by people how only remember the products from the latest training video. I also find a lot of the DIY stuff shockingly expensive.
The best places have isle that you can walk and look for inspiration and a knowledgeable staff.

interesting take - thanks for reading and the feedback. I think i'm assuming the hardware store employee here (the LLM) will in fact always have more knowledge of the inventory than you, and you just give it context.
