Special in a bad way.

They are prone to be lost to automation eventually.

They dont reliably stay in any 1 place, whoever is cheapest to produce will get it temporarily.

They typically are dangerous or otherwise crap jobs nobody wants.

GDP is greater to be in a high tech or high education job.

All that said, Trump is brilliant to try to force manufacturing back to the USA. In the near future when robots replace the workers. It's going to be able electricity costs and access to recycling or resources. Who has the factories at that moment will be who generates a ton of GDP and minimal risk for loss.
