Much of what is wrong in current political discourse is the over use of non normative must. Therefore I argue there is little or no must here, there is only wish and may.

Be careful what you wish for. It must be said, the outcome may be unexpected.

Also, Vance's role is not to be the successor to the king. He's there like all VP to be blamed when the time is right.

Until about Mondale, VPs were seldom given much to do. Yes, Nixon made a handy bad cop to Eisenhower's good cop. But without going to a reference, I can't name an VP who didn't succeed to the presidency between George Clinton and Alben Barkely. Well, OK, John Calhoun, chiefly because he was on such bad terms with Jackson.

This and Sam Harris realising that all his fellow travellers were both evil and stupid is my fave source of schadenfreude at the moment.

I think Scott had a subscriber only post a couple of weeks ago that was tiptoeing in the direction of admitting that all his BS concern about woke universities helped get us here but I can now find no trace of it (though I'm not a subscriber so that may be normal).

edit found it:

Still not read it as it's paywalled, but there's a response that suggests "the edgelord were right" implying Scott has started to realise the edgelords were wrong (though of course he can't just say that simply so it's all very vague):
