Meditation can be harmful – and can even make mental health problems worse

Purely anecdotal / speculative take, but I think those are pretty logical consequences of how meditation works. (I also fall into the population of people predisposed to mental illness.) Detachment and separation from your feelings is sort of the point, "ego death" even being an explicit goal. As a person who was already extremely cognitive, relatively detached from my own body / experience, and with a low extrovert / reward seeking nature, I think further detaching from lived experience and devaluing goals and experiences in the physical world put me in a place that felt very unreal and lifeless. Partially this could be related back to my own inexperience and lack of guidance or community around the practice, but I think it's a very real danger and people should be warned about it upfront. That said I believe much of the meditation community, especially very experienced practicioners, are aware of these risks and have coaching around how to avoid and overcome them.
