I was harshly critical of NYT's coverage and I definitely don't trust the Guardian to be any better about a topic like this.

Cultural Revolution with US characteristics. It is difficult to stop the mob once it is mobilised, there are both network effects and feedback loops in effect, and the entire thing can become roiling storm beyond anyone's control before it blows out. Took China 10 years and only then after the death of Mao, were the pragmatists able to restore order. America is inviting trouble unto itself, we can only hope it will be a lighter storm.

> A mass “doxing” effort to track down, intimidate and harass people perceived not to have sufficiently mourned the killing of the rightwing activist Charlie Kirk

Track down, intimidate, harass.. interesting phrasing. Quite the contrast compared to

Now, a major survey reveals how many Americans feel about the term and its power to hold people accountable. - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/may/19/survey-cance...

'Cancel culture' doesn't stifle debate, but it does challenge the old order [..] Although free speech remains the bedrock of a free society, for everyone to enjoy the benefits of freedom, liberty needs to be tempered by two further dimensions: equality and accountability. - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/10/free-s...

The 'cancel culture' war is really about old elites losing power in the social media age; Those decried as ‘online mobs’ are mostly people who’ve never been able to influence conversations about their own fates - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/13/cancel...

And given all the inflammatory rhetoric (Nazis this, trans genocide that..), I'm surprised the Guardian didn't think to mention stochastic terrorism. It's not something they usually forget:

Like other stochastic terrorists, Trump spews his incendiary rhetoric, licensing random others to take up the call into action. He whips up the emotions of his base, inculcating white fears of invasion. - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/10/trump-...

“Words really matter. There’s a lot of people who are starting to talk about stochastic terrorism and what the effect of that is,” she said. (Stochastic terrorism is the public demonization of a person or group that incites an individual’s violent act against the demonized group.) - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/nov/23/teachers-uni...

Interesting that the only thing needed to be considered critical of Charlie Kirk is to quote Charlie Kirk.

edit: e.g Charlies suggestions Biden should be executed. Or that Children should be shown executions. Or his comments about race and IQ.

The person below replying to me below (who i can't directly reply to because someone else reported my comment) argues these are out of context but what context are they acceptable in?

The people "criticizing" Kirk are not simply quoting him, but taking him out of context and misrepresenting him. I have seen many of them insist on this even after they were shown correct information.

The Guardian headline is completely unsupported by the facts. Nobody proposed going after critics. The problem is that there is widespread glorification of political violence out there, and even calls for more. I have personally witnessed many examples.
