It’s ironic how something homemade, idiosyncratic and counter-cultural like burning man can get co-opted (even by its founder) and become such a mainstream and beyond mainstream (where now only people with lots of disposable income attend) phenomenon that it eventually jumps the shark.

look up pastel qanon. You can always graft motivated reasoning on top of anything that's socially derived definitions.

The black community has dealt with social appropriation of it's culture for centuries.

At the end of the day, I believe the diversity we see exploding within humanity is driven by the social need for diversity, and the FOMO is what rent seekers look for to grift.

I dunno. Without cultural appropriation, the word would be poorer. The Romans took from the Greeks, renaissance Europeans took from the Romans, America took from the Europeans and Romans... Japan took from Europe and America, etc.. etc.

The irony to me is that something that was started as a local community in-thing for friends was coopted by "people" including its founder to become its own antithesis. It's not like someone came along and stole the idea and repurposed it. No, the community itself went along for the ride and took it to where it is today --post civilizational who-knows-what for mostly rich folks and some hangers-on. I mean, $60MM -what in hell?
