tinfoil hat: they want to reduce the bandwith cost of storing/serving high quality videos, so instead they keep low quality videos and AI upscale them. At the same time normalizing the AI aesthetics (there are plenty of AI slop videos on youtube already) and pretty soon people will be even less able to recognize fake from real.

I've been having great luck avoiding the AI slop videos by avoiding all videos that aren't by youtubers that I already know and trust. A few of them have already posted videos about how YouTube is making their videos look AI generated even though they're not.

If this becomes the normal aesthetic, that would basically make YouTube videos intolerable to watch, whether they're actually AI generated or not.
