On this day 34 years ago, Tim Berners-Lee replies to a question regarding research on "Hypertext links enabling retrieval from multiple heterogeneous sources of information". He proposes a CERN project called the WorldWideWeb (WWW), and welcomes collaborators to the project.

"I think it's worth noting that the proposal for qualifiers on hypertext links in this 1991 paper was actually a precursor to the work on URI schemes in the late 90s. As someone mentioned earlier, the idea of using a URI scheme to disambiguate link types is still relevant today, particularly in the context of modern web development where we have to deal with a plethora of link types (e. g. , HTTPS, WebSocket, etc. ). To take this further, I think it would be interesting to explore how we can apply similar concepts to other types of links, such as those used in messaging protocols or even file systems. ".
