Ask HN: What should I do with the domain github.mx?

Inspired by this comment [1] I impulsively bought this domain, any ideas on what to actually do with this?

Lightweight UI for Github? (If that doesn't already exist).

e.g. client requests https://github.mx/llvm/llvm-project, your server fetches the data from https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project (using an API or scraping the site), and renders it in a cleaner UI with less HTML and JavaScript.

It would be useful for slow/outdated devices and places with low internet bandwidth. The URL concept is similar to https://github.dev/llvm/llvm-project, which opens the project in a web-hosted VSCode (vaguely the opposite since VSCode is more UI but also more features).

good idea, that's appreciated!

Be careful with this. This could be considered cybersquatting, which is illegal with lots of prior cases.

What are the consequences of this? I think they can seize the domain for free if I'm misrepresenting the site as part of github, but lets assume I use no branding, etc what's the worst that can happen?

I don't know, I'm not a lawyer. But if somebody squatted my company's mx domain, I'd be a little concerned just from a phishing perspective alone. GitHub is also a trademark, so...

Unpopular opinion, park it and turn off auto-renew. I too had a typo github domain I used for training and with some hesitation I let it go when Microsoft bought them. They have a lot of lawyers and interesting priorities. perhaps an understatement on my part...

Did you get a cease and desist letter?
Bender · 6h ago
No, I did not wait for Microsoft's attention. I let that domain expire before the purchase was finalized. I've dealt with lawyers from other smaller companies and I do not enjoy the drama. Some people (some Youtubers) love expensive drama but it's just not for me.

Start a white-hat hacking service, offering companies help find flaws in their security.

That's not the worst idea, how does that tie back to the domain though?

Send (spear-) or otherwise phishing emails from that domain.

Maybe with some nonsense about MX records :-D

If you are careful and honest it’s not illegal. GitHub might still take the domain but if you aren’t misrepresenting anything you shouldn’t be on the hook for cybersquatting IMHO.

Not the worst idea
