It's because the caloric intake is greater than the expenditure. You won't lose weight if you're active but eating more calories than those you expend. Is this not common knowledge at this point?

Yes, the take on this is that you can be a couch potato all you like just do not eat less than the recommended "2200" calories a day.

Personally I eat about 1000 - 1200 calories a day. I don't count or anything but when I look back at my diet that is usually where it is. Currently 135 pounds and all I do is walk a bit, but under 5000 steps a day.
