Ehm is this the "official" assessment of the Gnome project?

I dunno. On the one hand, I think the whole x11 revival project is silly and isn't likely to live past 2030 for most hardware. x11 itself has been in maintenance-mode for years, so the ideological rift over whether or not it's a good idea to revive it is settled. Escalating this argument to ad-hominem is exactly what the trolls want, so they have a polemic to plant their flag in the ground against the "evil progressive agenda" they claim opposes them.
On the other hand, free software prevents you from banishing these people out of the Linux software community - it's their right to publish software as much as it is yours. The really sad part is that it's politicizing the most positive change Linux has had in years, on the heels of Nvidia finally treating Wayland like a first-class citizen. In the broadest sense, Wayland brings Apple Silicon, Nvidia, Intel and AMD users under one well-maintained umbrella. As time goes on, it's not going to make sense dying on the Xorg hill with most of the modern users on Wayland.
So, the war is over. Belligerent anti-Wayland trolls want you to take this bait and crash out.
