Surely they could have made an example of a more recent pirate rather than go after this one.

It’s madness for any of these pirates to be based in a western country, as no matter how good you think you are at concealing yourself, the amount of money being lost means companies will spend a lot to track you down hiring top level experts. Assisted by the USA and EU state level departments.

But it's okay for Meta to torrent libgen, right?

BBC sent a cease and desist to Perplexity today asking them to delete all past content and not scrape future. So appears there has been a delay as copyright holders get to grips with it.

This article is about someone running a tracker site, not just downloading.

Regardless of what you think of the ethics of pirating, they are completely different things.

Meta never ran a tracker. It's like the difference between being a drug user vs. a drug dealer. (And I'm not taking a stance on drugs either.)

There's just no comparison with Meta here.

A drug user that distributes drugs is also a drug dealer.

and one could argue that what Meta does is way worse, given that they seek to extremely monetize and exploit the intellectual property of others.

I don't know if this [1] article is only talking about taxes or if the statute of limitations also applies in this case but it may be worth looking into. Anyone here from Greece?
