Ask HN: Weather

It is absolutely pouring outside. But my weather app thinks it’s just cloudy.

Why is it that weather apps seem to be less accurate in the early summer time? So often it’s spot on with “the rain will stop in 20 minutes” but then there’s these storms that everyone on the ground knew were coming but the radar couldn’t predict.

How far are you from the nearest airport?

I’ve always wondered where this data comes from. The national weather service provides hourly data with observations from airports.

I’ve wondered where the higher resolution data comes from … Might even just be interpolation to the next forecast? Or some sort of radar based model?

What forecast model are you using?

I’m not sure what it does, but if you scroll all the way down in the app, you can report an issue, if the current conditions you’re seeing don’t match the forecast.

FWIW I've noticed iOS Weather is consistently less accurate than Google weather for the bay area.

iOS Weather app is for me accurate about 10% of the time. I keep it around on my phone as a joke with my daughter, we take bets how inaccurate will it be when we open it based on the weather outside.
