Oh my god. Just press for laws to be adjusted so we can have longer trucks already. It’s way more efficient, especially than using two trucks when one truck would do the job. You’ve got all this technology adding point of failures and additional cost to operate. You can use an advanced computer system to drive a second trailer, or just hitch them together and no extra tech needed

Seriously.
In some parts of the country you'll see trucks with 3 shorter (29') trailers,
while in others you'll see only 53' trailers.
I've seen 53' trailers get caught in tight curves on California highways that 29' trains would easily pass.

> a lead truck operated by a human driver is linked to a follower truck via encrypted, military-grade communications
These are empty filler words, signifying absolutely nothing.
> Signals from the lead truck control the follower truck’s steering, acceleration, and braking; in essence, the follower truck mimics what the lead truck does.
I'm sure that this article is effectively a press release, and shouldn't be taken as a technical description of what'll be happening, but it sure sounds like a great way for the lead truck to merge into an empty space in a lane, while the following truck merges into a minivan or another truck or a piece of construction equipment.

With more advanced self-driving maybe each driver will guide a "herd" of trucks across the USA.
