I'm guessing it was because they wanted to be known for offering more than HBO shows + movies. Their marketing focuses on things like live sports, reality shows and news.

They got rid of the HBO name because "Max" includes stuff from HBO, Warner Bros. and Discovery (Food Network, History channel, etc)

I always thought they ditched the HBO brand for Max because of the porn connotation that HBO still holds onto for a lot of people.
