Original title: WheelNext & Wheel Variants: An update, and a request for feedback!
This is an active thread on the official Python discussion forums that I think deserves even wider attention. I previously also submitted (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44611171) LWN coverage (https://lwn.net/Articles/1028299/) of the WheelNext project, which is trying to figure out how to expand the wheel format to serve more use cases while maintaining interoperability and backwards compatibility with existing tools.

It sounds like they're... Reinventing the wheel!
This is great! I avoided pytorch for way too long partly because the wheels were such a pain.
