28 years later the US would invade and capture Monterey, CA in the Battle of Monterey[1].

Also, fun fact (I guess), the Old Custom House is the first designated California Historical Landmark[2]. It marks the site where U.S. Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag and declared California part of the United States in 1846.
