It's not just an issue that objectively it's a lot of carbon, it's that they tried to bullshit people the last time that it was going to be "net zero" because they bought carbon credits.
Also now that they are playing in hotter places like Saudia Arabia and the US the players and fans are feeling the heat literally; it was a problem at the Club World Cup in the last two years, but not the worst problem of the CWC -- there is some appeal in questions like "How does MLS stack up against Ligue 1?" [1] it adds more games for teams that are already stretched by events like the Champions League.
