The lesson: Don't hand out plastic cards. Give people phones with digital wallets built in, and let them pay off the phone in 12 or 24 monthly instalments. That way you control the hardware, the payments, and the ecosystem.

I know people roll their eyes when I mention China, but the truth is, lots of Chinese companies use WeChat to pay benefits, bonuses, and sometimes even salaries. Meta spent billions on the metaverse and forgot to add a wallet to WhatsApp.
