They claim that that's a higher standard, though I don't quite accept that. Dubbing something "disinformation" means more than just "false". It means "false, and it was a deliberately introduced falsehood, starting at a source with a history of falsehoods".
It's used to push back: "Check your sources, and do not trust anything from this source". Merely dubbing a single fact false does nothing to stem the flow of falsehoods, and that flow is a torrent.
They don't have to make that their mission, if they don't want to. But it does diminish their utility.
