The only important question is whether students are actually still learning. Of course AI greatly helps with homework assignments, but does that actually mean students don't learn anything or learn much less?
If they are using AI to stop engaging with the content this is obviously disastrous, but easily detectable by just giving them pre AI exams and testing their understanding without using AI.
It also is possible that they are using AI, but it helps them learn. Obviously one of the best ways to learn anything is having a tutor with eternal patience, who is able to answer most of your questions and is available whenever you need him.

Anthropic’s own study on Claude use showed that people are using it to skip homework by synthesizing answers, although that admission is phrased more diplomatically.
As for this issue, I feel that this will resolve itself in one of two ways: either homework will be eliminated completely in favor of completing teacher assigned tasks in a device free classroom, or the easier but slightly more intrusive solution whereby homework is done on a digital device where a camera recording and typing speed are considered as a proof-of-work mechanism. Proctoring software already exists and it’d be relatively easy to extend them with such a feature.

Or homework is seen as a way for students to engage with the materials they are being learning about. Having an AI spoon-feed them the answers is not that different from students not doing the homework and failing the exams.

The latter would be a disaster for privacy and I hope it becomes illegal.

AI is going to wreck their entry-level job prospects anyway, which is 100x more important and invalidates the need for diplomas to begin with.

To detect AI-generated content, teachers must start generating content with AI.
