The literary awards are to be blamed partially. The kind of books chosen for awards are chosen for their stories or setting the narrative. They are not chosen for being a literary genius but rather telling some morose story about drugs or some form of repression. What these awards are assuming them selves to be reporting on oppression awards and not literary weaving awards.
Another culprit is market forces. The dumber you assume your audience is the wider your sales will be but then generations of children and youngsters will grow up to be stupid. I blame harry potter, twilight and all other commercial success novels
