I can't help but be reminded of people talking in exactly the same way about the inevitability of cryptocurrency and web3 taking over the entire world economy, and how the non-believers would be crushed and left destitute by the march of progress. Sometimes it was even the very same people, and particularly VC "thought leaders", who are now saying the same things about AI.

But 'AI' (Transformers) already see more real world use than crypto-currencies ever did. I think it's much more comparable to the internet, which caused and continues to cause major disruptions in every sector.

Even just the scale copilot is being used to summarize and draft emails is still more real-world use than web3 could dream of achieving.

Drafting and summarizing emails is a funny example to draw on when that's like the canonical example of LLMs creating problems for LLMs to solve. Messages written by LLMs tend to be needlessly verbose, so people use LLMs to summarize them back into something digestible, and the "real world use" metrics go up despite zero actual value being created for anyone involved.
