On 29 August 1930, the entire population of the small island of St. Kilda, Scotland was completely and permanently evacuated. One reason was that its farm fields were contaminated with lead and other pollutants - which had unknowingly been added to the manure used to fertilize the fields, over a long period of time.
At least from the article, it doesn't sound like England's so-called government views the current situation there as a problem worth bothering themselves about.
