While I like AI, this feels a bit Clever Hans* to me.

To take a deliberately extreme example to make the point: if you have a deck of cards with phrases on them, and you pick them at random to make jokes, but then get a human to filter the results to only give the best answers, the human is doing the heavy lifting.

The better the AI, the easier the job of the human filter, so you can track progress, but it only becomes the equal of a human (at anything, not just jokes) when you no longer need to bother with a human to filter the output.
