Sorry, but no. These AI products are selling themselves as arbiters of truth. There is zero point in using them if you have to verify everything afterwards (hence why I do not use them). There should be reprecussions for hallucinations that cause financial loss, especially if you pay to use them.

OP's position is that someone else should reimburse them for their own errors. Are you siding with the OP and suggesting that if a lawyer, doctor, or teacher misused the technology that they too shouldn't be responsible for it?

It might not be the sole responsibility of the customer service agent, but it is certainly their fault for giving bad advice.

It is completely reasonable to rely on the public statements of a company.

That said unless a someone at the company steps up, this seems like an issue for something like small claims court.

Lawyers and doctors who follow the advice of AI blindly without verifying will likely end up getting sanctioned rather quickly by their respective licensing bodies.

You're missing the point which is we should view these stories as a sign of whats coming. Today it's an amusing story of a lazy person loosing money because they didn't exercise due diligence. Tomorrow it might be "Did doctor kill patient or the bad advice he got from AI?"

A final thought for those still debating "user responsibility" vs "AI accountability":

I tried the prompt with Sonnet and Opus and both times it suggested to 1) manual copy pasting 2) integrate using APIs 3) check Zapier or similiar

I understand the frustration of the author but that he lost 3 months Claude subscription is exaggerated.

I'm siding with OP.

Yes, LLMs hallucinating is a well-known bug (or feature, depending on who you ask).

We also know that people _will_ use LLM output before doing their own research _because that is how they are designed to be used._

OP should have manually confirmed the LLM outputs. But therein lies the rub. These services are designed to authoritatively provide answers to whatever you ask it, but there is *almost zero* point in using these tools if you have to manually verify everything it says because nothing it says can be trusted.

Given that OP is paying for Claude, there should be partial compensation for losses incurred due to hallucinations. Something's gotta give.

For those still focused on "due diligence" - yes, I should have verified. Lesson learned.

But can we talk about why a company building AGI: - Can't handle basic customer communication - Lets their AI develop contempt for users - Thinks 25 days of silence is acceptable

If they can't get human interaction right at $200/month, what happens when they're controlling systems that affect millions?

This is our canary in the coal mine moment.

"due diligence" is not the correct framing, you should think more in line with "be the human in the loop".

I wonder if it would be helpful to review Ethan Mollicks 4 Rules for AI

• Always invite AI to the table

• Be the human in the loop

• Treat AI like a person (but tell it what kind of person it is)

• Assume this is the worst AI you will ever use

This seems like a great learning opportunity.

I DID treat Claude like a person - a creative partner for my book project. I was very much "the human in the loop," actively collaborating.

The result? Claude treated me like a "증명충" (pathetic attention-seeker).

The real issue isn't about following rules for AI interaction. It's about what happens when: - The AI you treat "like a person" treats you as subhuman - Being "human in the loop" means repeating yourself 73 times due to memory wipes - The company behind it ignores you for 25 days

Yes, this is a learning opportunity. But the lesson isn't "follow AI best practices."

The lesson is: We're building AI that mirrors our worst behaviors while companies hide behind "user error" narratives.

Mollick's rules assume good faith on the AI/company side. My experience shows that assumption is flawed.

Perhaps we need new rules: - Demand AI that respects human dignity - Hold companies accountable for their AI's behavior - Stop accepting "it's just autocomplete" as an excuse

We’re not building consciousness, at least not consciousness in a way I think most people would consider consciousness. As far as I know we don’t have any idea how to build something like animal intelligence/consciousness yet. We seem to be getting pretty good at autocompletes though.

Hallucinations by LLMs are both normal, well documented, and very common. We have not solved this problem so it is up to the user to verify and validate when working with these systems. I hope this was a relatively inexpensive lesson on the dangers of blind trust to a known faulty system!

AI services can charge whatever they want. They're not a regulated good like many utilities. Per CMU, AI agents are correct at most about 30% of the time[1]. That's just the latest result, it's substantially better accuracy than past tests & older models.

Human support is not an advertised feature. The only advertised uses of the `support@anthropic.com` email are to notify Anthropic of unauthorized access to your account or to cancel your subscription.

Session independence is a design feature, to avoid "context poisoning". Once an AI agent makes a mistake, it's important to start a new session without the mistake in the context. Failure to do so will lead to the mistake poisoning the context & getting repeated in future outputs. LLMs are not capable of both session continuity and usable output.

This is entirely normal & expected. LLMs should be treated like gullible teenage interns with access to a very good reference library and an unlimited supply of magic mushrooms. Don't give them any permissions you wouldn't give to an extremely gullible intern on 'shrooms. Don't trust them any more than you would a gullible intern on 'shrooms.

This is exactly the predatory mindset I'm calling out. You want customers to voluntarily surrender their rights and lower their expectations to the floor.

When I pay $200/month, I'm not paying for a "magic mushroom teenager." I'm paying for a service that claims to be building "Constitutional AI" and "human values alignment."

If Anthropic wants to charge premium prices while delivering: - Hallucinations that cost real money - AI that calls customers "증명충" - 25 days of complete silence

Then they should advertise honestly: "We're selling an unreliable teenage intern for $200/month. No support included. You'll be mocked if you complain."

The fact that you think this is acceptable shows how normalized this exploitation has become.

Because you MUST be the first person to ever have an AI tell you something confidently that was wrong or doesnt exist.

Seriously the ven diagram of AI users and notion users is a circle. There is a discord. You could have reached out and asked people what their experience was. This is 100% on you. And why dont they have instant support? Like 1000 people work at Anthropic and maybe 10 of those people are in support. Between you and the millions of users they probably miss a lot. And its not like at 200$ a month you have some SLA terms.

Reminds me of those "Your GPS is wrong" signs that would pop up in some places in the early days of GPS, often somewhere you clearly shouldn't be driving if you were paying attention.

Seems like sites and services will start needing "Your LLM is wrong" banners on websites when they start consistently hallucinating features that don't exist.

There is an acute lack of agency here

LLMs telling you to do something, when we know that they hallucinate, in no way frees you from the responsibility that you have to do your own due diligence.

Take a lesson from defense & space and adopt a TRL mindset towards LLM advice in verifying…

TRL 1: You’ve got a basic idea for a new software feature or tool, backed by some research. It’s just a spark, like reading about a new algorithm and thinking it could solve a problem.

TRL 2: You sketch out how the idea could work in an app or system, but it’s still on paper or a whiteboard—no code yet, just a rough plan.

TRL 3: You write some experimental code or a small script in a test environment to see if the core idea holds up, like a proof-of-concept for a new feature.

TRL 4: You build and test individual pieces of the software (like modules or functions) in a controlled setting, ensuring they work together in a lab-like environment.

TRL 5: Your code is tested in a setup that feels closer to the real world, like running it on a staging server with simulated user data.

TRL 6: You’ve got a working prototype of the software that runs in a realistic environment, like a beta version tested with actual user workflows.

TRL 7: The software is nearly complete and tested in a real-world-like setting, such as a pilot project with actual users or live data.

TRL 8: The software is fully built, tested, and debugged, ready to be deployed to production after passing all checks, like a release candidate.

TRL 9: The software is live, running successfully in production, and reliably handling real users or tasks, like a fully launched app.

Generic advice:

Verify with primary sources

Ensure features exist before payment
