For many years there has been an extortion email going around along these lines. It's apparently effective because for some percentage of people it may match their behavior

Unfortunately publicity about this attack makes the scam email all the more plausible.

On the plus side, the whole thing is easily avoidable and hopefully awareness will improve peoples operational security.
