Cancer is a stretch, as we have enough trouble detecting that with deep sequencing - but cool nonetheless for viral screening.

Yah my first thought too. There are some common germline variants and tumor mutations which can drive cancer, otherwise a lot of novel mutations which I don't think this probe could detect. Cancer analysis from whole genome sequencing is still very much an in-progress field. Maybe detecting a small number of common drivers at wide/cheap scale is enough to provide big impact. Especially for cancers where the cause is quite specific, like HPV for cervical cancer.
