I know layer 2 chains have lots of hype, but its nice to see improvements to the Ethereum layer 1 mentioned in the article. Although proving may be slow, verifying proofs is exponentially faster and can use a constant amount of memory (depending on the proving system), which could allow for extremely lightweight nodes to verify the layer 1 chain.
I remember hearing that Ethereum aims to be verifiable with only $1,000 worth of hardware. If they were implement validity proofs, it would be much easier for people to verify the chain on everyday hardware.
