> The truth is that exports are nice to have, but imports are vital. The United States imports things because it can’t make them at home, or in any case doesn’t currently make them at home. Losing an export market might idle a factory or two, but losing access to irreplaceable imports could cripple the entire economy.

Equally some exports are vital for their earnings, and some imports are inessential luxuries.
