A legal resolution would establish which country has owned it the entire time the conflicting claims have been around, not just from that point forward.

Loved the part where it described all the previous 'emperors', 'kings' etc, who had claimed the area without ever setting foot there.
Come on... boots on the ground or it doesn't count.
And I'd prefer any interested parties consider themselves "caretaker" rather than "owner". Care for the land & its inhabitants, and (maybe) you can carry the title. Rape it, and you have no business being there.
