I post my own stuff occasionally, sometimes it even gets put into the 2nd chance pool ("pool" here: <https://news.ycombinator.com/lists>), without my asking. But I don't abuse the privilege.

Fair enough. I don't want to come off as A Problem so I'll try to post non-me stuff more.
I'm trying to follow "POSSE" principles[0] but I keep hitting this "no self-promotion" wall. Not just here, but on reddit and other sites. I'm not trying to promote anything, I just want to own my content and share it. I don't have ads on my site. I'm not a shill. I just want to write about bikes.
I get mixed messaging between the hacker spirit of doing and sharing things, but be careful how much you talk about it. It's a little dispiriting and makes me less excited about sharing my work.
OK rant over. Fun note: I just noticed you're so close to having a beautiful round number of upvotes here (65535)
"Less than half" is a good guideline, and I'd stick well below that.
You can promote your own work. But that should be within a context of actual engagement with HN: "your self-posts shouldn't be even close to 50% of what you're doing here" <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41250511>. (Dang's one of the mods.)
Traction's hard, I feel you. Give it time and write good stuff.

I checked both your submissions and submission history for your site. HN makes this trivial.

Some is OK. Mostly is not.
You'll get dinged by flags, or automatically through software, eventually.
