IMO, just refunding the deposits for the extenders isn't good enough, since some people might have only bought the truck at all because of the range it would be able to get with the extender.

I’ll never understand why companies announce hardware products when they haven’t figured out all but known-fixable issues. It seems like a recipe for a ton of stress on the team internally, which doesn’t produce good results when you are doing something innovative (it works okay for rote death marches).

This is Elon Musk‘s MO: announce a feature that would be groundbreaking for the industry well before you have any real understanding of whether it can be built in the first place. A lot of old classmates are at SpaceX now and have told many horror stories of this happening across their projects.

given the design constraints and real-world complexity of a removable range extender.
It always felt like a duct-tape solution to the fundamental issue: range anxiety + massive weight + limited charging infrastructure for long hauls.

> removable range extender
It wasn't going to be removable. It was going to be permanently installed by service when you bought it.

Once again the Prius-heavy portfolio pays off for the anxious driver
