His publication of the book "Ultimate Computing" in _1987_ was astonishing.
I found it in 1988 or 1989, read it cover to cover.
In the era known now as the "AI Winter", I remember it as a time when it became clear that logic programming over a collection of facts was never going to get us to AGI. Same time, Rumelhart and McClelland published their books on "Parallel Distributed Processing", training neural networks via back-propagation; McClelland has continued this work and has a current version at https://web.stanford.edu/group/pdplab/pdphandbook/handbook.p...
But Hameroff - an anesthesiologist - had such a different take on things.
Claims, along with Roger Penrose, that consciousness is a quantum-mechanical phenomenon... well, I remain unconvinced.
(My only credentials on this matter consist of my opinions and my ability to post them on the internet, but these days that's apparently sufficient.)
Anyhow, the video is worth a look.

AGI != consciousness.
This guy gives me strong "esoteric nonsense" vibes with a dose of fraudulent alzheimers research.
The part of "quantum dissemination" as out-of-body experience was ridiculous. He jumped from "this might be a source of consciousess" straight to perception and reincarnation and eastern mysticism. Recovering my trust from such a blunder is practically impossible, since i encountered too many book selling bullshitters of that kind, giving interviews in doctors outfits in front of bookshelfs.
