US Navy is retiring the last of its cruisers, 'the pinnacle of naval power'

This is more of a change in terminology than a reduction in capabilities. They are replacing 9,600 long ton Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers with 9,700 long ton Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers.
