I feel like if the current president was less confrontational many of these companies would have voiced louder concerns ... but eventually accounting happens.

The fact these tariffs exist point to a president not willing to deal with facts and reality. I'm not sure anymore if the accounting will make any difference. This administration is living in an alternate reality comprised of alternate facts.

I assume the current administration would just see it as good pressure to demand bribes.

We have seen several situations where folks come to visit the white house and leave with exceptions to policy.

Sadly, that is indicative of a dictatorship...

GM also had some of the best months in recent times with regard to sales numbers. Does this factor in not just what they spent in tariffs but sales that they received exactly because other cars were paying tariffs, perhaps even higher?

Ie., it's working as intended?

Quite likely. Either that or it's not.

On a positive note, people could be advocating for overall prosperity, and let the "market" sort it out. If they really wanted to and were capable.

OTOH if you don't have the stomach for overall prosperity, not even the type of acumen, you can have an equally impactful outcome of picking winners & losers by doing more direct damage to some Americans than others.

Downturns in foreign commerce can be highly significant and easy to follow the money on, but the way this is developing, that international decline only occurs as a result of collateral damage compared to that of the overall US economy. Which is very diffuse and capable of suffering huge dollar value being sucked out without being able to pinpoint any one loser while at the same time you can point to occasional winners that prevail under these conditions, like GM right now.

But that could change on a whim.
