Gurman: Apple will seriously consider acquiring Mistral

Would be curious about where the value of this acquisition lie. Usually acquisitions like this are high level recruitment operations. Apple is sorely lacking in AI implementation so I’m not sure more research is what they’re after. What engineer competencies are they adding to their arsenal with this?

That sounds like bad news. Mistral has been the leading privacy-focused LLM company providing open source models. Apple prioritizes privacy, but their walled-garden strategy is comlpetely opposed to what Mistral has been doing. The acquisition of Mistral, potentially ending their open source innovations, would make the LLM marketplace worse-off overall.

Weird headline. Mistral is only mentioned in one sentence, and from the surrounding links it appears that the only source is that the author suggested it.
