To put it in comparison, accident rate of helicopters is 71x that of airliners per flight hour, or at least 250x per kilometre flown, or at least 20x per flight. Per flight, this is 1980s airliner level, per hour, 1970s level, and per kilometre, it is 1960s level. Helicopters may have become safer but they are far from what we perceive as "safe" - people in 1960s were afraid of flying and legitimately so.
