After a while, the article admits that its headline is bogus. For a wide variety of reasons. Though it definitely underplays this one:

> That same year it was also decided that India would "not be allowed to run the Persian Gulf" if it became independent.

The British Empire, drawing lines through other peoples' lands and lives in distant London, was sure-as-hell not going to gift its "own" critical strategic oil supply to the Indian nationalists.
