> In 2026, the Commission will present a Technology Roadmap on encryption to identify and evaluate solutions that enable lawful access to encrypted data by law enforcement, while safeguarding cybersecurity and fundamental rights.
There is no such thing as a secure backdoor, so I wonder how they will "safeguard cybersecurity" (hint: they won't).
Don't worry, this is fine because backdoors will only be used to spy against right wing people and parties or those engaging in hate speech, so you have nothing to fear if you're on their side and only say government approved things. This is the only way we can fight fascism.

Historical the European governments have been much more focused in left wing organizations, going so far as under cover agents fathering children with left wing activists and than vanishing.
Things have changed in forty years, you know. The pendulum is back on the other side.
saubeidl · 7h ago
It is not. The EU is run by the right wing and has for the past thirty years. Please do not spread misinformation.
dofubej · 7h ago
The… progressive, interventionist, feminist, equalitarianist, socialist right wing. Yes.
saubeidl · 7h ago
What are you talking about?
The Comission president is from the CDU, a right-wing party.
The Parliament president is from the Maltese Nationalist Party, a right-wing party.
The Parliament has a right-wing majority.
Where are those scary socialists?
dofubej · 7h ago
The CDU is a progressive, tax-raising party. Nothing right wing about it. I don’t know the rest. All the parties in Europe that were traditionally understood as right wing have moved to the left at neck breaking speed. That’s why actual right wing parties have appeared to fill the spot that was left by those parties, which is what the media now calls the rise of fascism.
MForster · 5h ago
The CDU has moved from very right to less right, but still right-of-center under Merkel. After Merkel they have moved back right, maybe even more than they were to compete with the extremists.
saubeidl · 7h ago
The CDU is a progressive party? That's just being facetious.
Though I suppose if you're at the very extreme right, even moderate right wing starts to look like left wing extremism.
dofubej · 7h ago
A party that, for instance, defends same-sex marriage is not progressive? What is it then?
I haven’t moved one iota in decades, it’s the right wing parties that have moved to the left. If that puts me at the extreme, what can I do.
saubeidl · 7h ago
A progressive party would for example argue for major wealth redistribution towards the less fortunate.
A left-wing party might even argue towards workers owning the means of production.
The CDU argues in the interests of established capitalists, you know, the thing that the right-wing does.

This is priceless.
So you can either define yourself as right or left but you still feel persecuted by the EU. Meaning someone is tricking you so you will keep fighting.
Good news you too might actually be on the same side, the loosing one.
Live long enough and you will have seen the full inversion of the right and the left or what they pretend to fight for.
The EU institutions have been labeled as hyper capitalist, hyper liberal or a new instance of the soviet union since their inception. I tend to believe all of those can be true at the same time.
saubeidl · 4h ago
I define myself as left and while I'm not happy with the EU, it's still the best thing we've got.
While being unabashedly pro-capitalist, it's still roughly pro-consumer and has greatly increased cultural exchange between constituent states It's definitely better than us being 27 isolated countries in this scary world.
Maybe one day we'll manage to actually do the socialist takeover that the other guy was fantasizing about, but I'm not holding my breath.

So you're pointing out one unrelated article from the UK gov actions of 1986 on a NGO as proof that EU is somehow anti-left politics? lol If you knew the UK gov, they don't like communism and communists especially during Thatcher, so any such NGOs would de under scrutiny, but that's a different issue than left wing politics.
How about looking at EU's polices and behavior as a whole and see where they are.
Why are European governments like Germany and France banning right wing candidates from elections, authorizing the use of spyware on them, or forming a "cordon sanitaire" around them even though most of their policies are the common sense left wing ones of the 1990s (no illegal immigration, strict legal immigration)?
EU today is by and large ideologically captured by super left wing and against anything remotely right.
saubeidl · 7h ago
The EU is literally run by a right-wing commission, with the commission president from a right-wing party.
The last left-wing commission president was Jacques Delors in 1995 (!).
Please do not spread disinformation to support your extremist agenda.

I just realized your username fits you
saubeidl · 2h ago
I just realized you have no response to being called for your persistent misinformation and would rather distract with an ad hominem attack.
unconed · 1h ago
You mean the same commission that disregarded precedent, to instead exclude right wing members at a time when they are getting more votes?
You're operating under the old left vs right definition when it's obviously shifted towards globalism vs national sovereignty. Nobody believes the left stands for supporting the laborers and their interests anymore.
saubeidl · 1h ago
I'm not sure what you're referring to.
Of course the left supports laborers and their interests. They just don't have much representation in the EU. Various identity politics movements are not left wing, they're a liberal distraction from the failures of capitalism. Communist parties are.
There is no such thing as a secure backdoor, so I wonder how they will "safeguard cybersecurity" (hint: they won't).
The right just loves to complain.
