Didn't Microsoft do something like that with Windows in 1995? Will this last as long as Microsoft's experiment with year-based versioning?

MS has basically done the same but obscured it. Windows 10 was released in 2015, after that you got build numbers tacked on like 1511 (November 2015) and later 22H2 (2nd half 2022). Windows 11 does the same thing and is up to 24H2.
